Srebrenica and Belgrade - Serbia
Srebrenica is in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the Bosnian War on July 1995, refugees who had fled to the area with promises of safety from the United Nations were massacred en masse in what is described as the worst act of genocide seen in Europe since WWII. Over 8,000 Bosnian muslims were killed, mainly male, as the females were forcibly deported. The most effecting part of visiting this somber site was that many of the bodies are still being exhumed for identification, and families are still finding out their loved ones fate to this day, ending almost 2 decades of speculation. The proximity of these events to my lifetime made me feel strange - seeing the horror in colour photographs, and widows visiting graves was incredibly sobering, in contrast to a level of separation (not lack of empathy) I felt when visiting Auschwitz and would feel in Austria at Mounthausen.
I was uninspired by Belgrade. I am sure I missed out on a lot of treasures as we only stopped for the night, but I was disappointed that my highlight was going through a drive-though bus wash while singing Christina Aguilera's "Car Wash" with all my tour mates at top volume.
